Happy New Year! I hope you all had a joyful close to 2010. I had such a lovely holiday filled with good ol' family time and so much generosity.

I was overwhelmed by the thoughtful surprises that found their way under my tree, including a stunning custom painting of C and I from C's little brother. He commissioned it by the amazingly talented Irene Pau. We are the first couple she's painted!

In celebration of a new year and new beginnings, you will soon see a change to the Lovelyvélo website. Stay tuned and happiest beginnings to all of you!

My wish list was small this year; I've been feeling completely overwhelmed by all the joy and happiness in my life that I really can't imagine needing anything else.

But because my family drops a a few goodies into each stocking, I gave this little list:

* Luxe City Guides for New York, Chicago, Melbourne and Sydney (all places I'm headed in 2011!)

* Glue refills for my ATG 700 (I can't live without this thing, it makes magic!)

* Anything fromThe Paper Place on Queen West.

A trip to Marrakech would not be complete without at least a sneak peek at the legendary La Mamounia. Recently re-opened, this is the place to see and be seen in the Red City. I have to say, for me, it did not live up to the hype. Although the gardens were mystical, I found the interior to be dark and a tad pretentious. I had only a chance for a quick look about, but perhaps next year I'll get to see for myself what has the celebrities buzzing...

I've been home from Morocco nearly a month already and can't believe I have yet to share with you the property gems of Marrakech!

I have to start with Vanessa Branson's Riad El Fenn because it is such a magical little hideaway in the bustling Medina. I was fortunate to spend one night here and felt perfectly at home. The boho-rustic decor is cozy and inviting, especially in the crisp air of November. Each of the 21 rooms has its own personality (mine had red leather walls!) and there are no keys for the doors.

In the morning, a beautiful tray of mint tea and fruit waits outside each room and can be enjoyed in one of several courtyards or on the breathtaking rooftop. At night, the roof twinkles with hanging lights and candles and offers a stunning view of the Katuba Kasbah.

For a serene and romantic spin on Marrakech, this is absolutely the perfect choice.

At the whirlwind of holiday-time, I am back with very exciting news: C and I are getting married!

He proposed in the beautiful lounge of the Soho Hotel before we walked to a delicious and cozy dinner at Marben. I was so suprised and so overwhelmed, it has taken me a week (and a work trip to Vegas!) to recover.

What better way to celebrate the magic and sparkle of Christmas!

I am just back from over 2 weeks in Morocco for an incredible trip to the High Atlast Mountains and a phenomenal conference in Marrakech. This Kensington loft is my favourite space from Covet Garden so far. The jungle of books and plants are a perfect compliment to the bright and dramatic high ceilings. Need I draw your attention to the bath?! No, you oohed and aahed already, right?

It's official! The 2011 Tour de France course has been released. What better way to celebrate than to imagine ourselves high up in the Alps. From the cozy restored 1771 farmhouse, Mas de Coutettaz, we can get a marvelous panoramic view of the mountains and phenomenal access to the riders!Looks like winter would be pretty wonderful at the farmhouse too! I think I may do better skiing downhill in the Alps than trying to tackle those climbs on my bike, n'est-ce pas?!

With Fall the perfect time to travel through Canada and the best season for Anthropologie shopping, I'm taking my favourite of the October collection to B.C.'s Hastings House on Salt Spring Island.A little morning pedal past farmland with ocean and mountain views, followed by an afternoon lunch and warm coffee overlooking Ganges Harbour, then cozying up by the fire with fresh brea d and cheese before a delicious local lamb dinner prepared by Chef Marcel sums up a perfect day on the island.

I'm headed back to New York tomorrow (via Porter Airlines of course!) and will be staying this time at the Mansfield Hotel at 44th & 5th. Sadly, I won't be crashing in the penthouse. But how amazing is the sunken tub?!

It's just a quick trip with a fundraiser tomorrow night (for the Mario Batali Foundation!) and appointments all day Thursday. What's in my mini suitcase? My Nanette Lepore pants, Banana Republic blouse, J. Crew pencil skir t and a gem of a purchase from Spain, my Bershka black leather jacket.

As a self-proclaimed chocoholic, I love stumbling on a good new dessert. After cheering on C's Dad at the Scotia Bank Marathon yesterday, we piled into the car and made our way to this bizarre icecream shop where garden gnomes, tobogans and enormous icecream cones decorate the walls - inside and out! At Dutch Dreams, the cones come with a heap of fruit, whipped cream and a waffle on top of your scoop! Or, like C's Dad, you can opt for a full litre shake. I went for the Heavenly Dutch chocolate icecream, obviously.

My little sister and her husband just took possession of their new house and have begun renovations on the bathroom and laundry space. While the details of the bathroom are all buttoned down, ideas are afloat for laundry tubs. I think these 2 are awesome, especially the aluminum bucket!

After Vegas, I jumped back out West to work in Vancouver for a few weeks and attend a stunning vintage-styled wedding in Kelowna (pics coming soon!).

This post over at Peonies and Polaroids is one of my favourites. I often go back to read it when I'm in a funk because it makes me laugh.

Since I've been back from a long week of conferences in Vegas, I have been in a total fog. Forgetting things, losing things, tripping over things, you get the picture.

This morning, I attempted to start fresh with a nice cup of hot tea and a clean desk. And what did I do? Spilled the hot tea all over myself. Anyone stopping by better watch out for flapping wings!

I'm off tonight for a full week travel conference in Vegas, baby! We'll be staying at the Bellagio (how stunning is this photo of umbrellas hanging from the Bellagio lobby ceiling?) and while most of my time will be spent in conference rooms, I hope to have a little fun too ;)

The week ends with a global styles-themed gala. I found hair orchid ornaments at H&M... a perfect match to my yukata!

My aching muscles have asked lovelyvelo to take us to the soothing hot springs of Japan today. There is nothing more serene than a beautifully designed onsen bath. Of course, a bath amongst volcanic rock would be lovely too, but I`m in the mood for a private soak in a ryokan with lush bamboo views.

Coincidentally, I am actually packing my suitcase tonight with my grandmother`s beautiful white and navy Yuakata to wear to a costume gala in Vegas next week. I just need to find the perfect hair piece to go with it. I`m thinking bright pink cherry blossoms!

Travel + Leisure has announced their World's Best Awards and the hotels list is a feast for the eyes... and the suitcase!

It's no surprise that 2 of the top 5 find themselves in India, a rolling trend that celebrates the country's amazing architecture and exquisite service.

Today, I'm packing my suitcase (and C's because I can in the perfect world of my own blog ;) for a jaunt to each of these gorgeous properties. Both of these styles that I discovered on The Sartorialist blend well into all of the hotel backdrops, don't you think? I need to replicate this chica's outfit for my next travels. I endeavoured to make my very first pie this weekend. I grew up loving my grandmother's raspberry and blackberry pies, but I thought I would make C's favourite since cherry season is in full swing.

I did all the prep work yesterday, adding my Nana's secret ingredient (vodka!) to the pastry and pitting the cherries. I popped the pie in the oven about an hour ago and the house is smelling delicious!

I got to sit through an amazing presentation by Virgin Limited this morning and spent all afternoon daydreaming about a stay at The Lodge in Verier, Switzerland.

What was once a 35 room chalet, has now been converted to an exclusive 9 suite getaway nestled in the French Alps. See that little stuffed pup on the bed? When you'd prefer not to be disturbed, just place the pup outside your door and his little collar that says "let sleeping dogs lie" keeps visitors at bay.

After a full day of skiing, a dip in the indoor pool and a visit down to the wine cellar, I'd say a little R&R is well deserved ;)

I woke up on the wrooong side of the bed this morning. Hey, it happens right?

But all was turned right-side up again when I showed up to work to find that a colleague had brought in St-Viateur Montreal Bagels from a weekend in Quebec. An absolute Canadian indulgence, they are best eaten lightly toasted with whipped cream cheese.

Amazing how the little things can brighten a day, eh?

I'm guilty! I promised I would not get into this season of the Bachelorette, but alas, I'm hooked. In this week's edition of Suitcase Tuesday, we're sailing across the Pacific to beautiful French Polynesia where Miss Ali hopes to hook her future hubby.

Each season, I like to guess which hotel will be featured in the final episodes of the Bach. I did well in guessing Matakauri Lodge for Jason's New Zealand episodes. (best bathrooms with a view!) For this season, I'm putting my pennies on Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa (just 230 km west of Tahiti).

Chris L is definitely my favourite, which is why I hope he doesn't get the final rose. He needs a drama free life and a sweet gal just like his 2 sisters-in-law!

At last, the beautiful table that C has been working on is complete and ready for dinner party hosting! We found reclaimed barn board on Craigslist, used steel pipes from Home Depot for the legs, stained and varnished it all for just over $100!

Boomer can't resist a photo shoot ;) He loves these chairs that I found on Craigslist. The seat is lined with studded leather which I think keeps him cool.

The beginning of July spoiled me with a FIVE day long weekend. It was perfect in every sense, full of all things crafty and creative. C and I worked in the garden, built and painted some furniture and I dilly-daddled with some invitations that I sold on etsy to a lovely bride in Colorado Springs. I imagine a similar weekend happening over on Emerson's farm. Could her blog and style be any more perfect? I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw her new clothing collection. I am officially obsessed!

Remember the lovely Miss L? It's her first birthday as a MOM today and I'm hoping she enjoys every minute. She just sent me this photo of her old living room. She and her new family moved 1/2 hr north of the city last month and I still haven't seen their new home! If this adorable space is any indication, I'm sure the new space is amazing.

I've always believed that the best place to learn about a new place is at the market. Food tells you so much about a culture, but the way the locals sell and shop for their wares tells you so much more!
We started our Mallorca trip with a morning at the local Sunday market. The local olives were to die for.

I'm a people watcher (I get it from my Dad), and could sit in an old square for hours at market time just watching the folks go by... How precious is this old couple? It took them about 10 minutes to walk across the tiny courtyard, I think they're off to a party! Look at the little gift bag he's holding ;)

{suitcase tuesday: a villa in mallorca...}

Without a doubt, the winning feature of our villa was the wrap-around patio. Both the north and south side had beautiful, 14 foot harvest tables - one with a view of the pool and the other with a sweeping view of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains.
Sadly, I did not get a proper photo of the outdoor kitchen just next to this table, but the hanging baskets on the kitchen door give you a tiny sense of its rustic charm.

We all agreed that a villa vacation is the ultimate way to travel as a family. We shopped at the Sunday Market (photos tomorrow!) and cooked the entire week, just as if the villa was our own home. Everyone was so relaxed and truly had a chance to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Pollença, Mallorca!

An exciting day here at lovelyvélo, celebrating one year since my first post! In addition to being inspired by all of you creative bloggers and readers, lovelyvélo has been a collection of many wonderful experiences that all just happen to coincide with the letter "C".

Since the first post, both of my parents, C+C (truly!) turned 60. We celebrated my Dad's with a round of golf and a cozy campfire in the backyard. My Mom's was an amazing week in Mallorca (with pictures to come soon!).

The summer ended with a beautiful garden cocktail wedding and the addition of a new family member - a brother! And no surprise here... he's a C too! (gorgeous couple, non?!)

Then in November, after scoring a new job, my C and I whisked off to Cuba. The ultimate highlight, catching Buena Vista Social Club live... for free!

When we got home, we adopted the cuddly cat I had been wishing for. He was perhaps a little over-cuddly at first but is finally gaining some independence!

Over the winter, I was so lucky to support CANADA in the 2010 games. My parents and I volunteered and my sister and best friend had the amazing privilege to carry the torch. The celebration gave me so much to be proud of!

If you read lovelyvélo often, you know there's a C that appears here regularly. The beautiful bike he built me for my 30th inspired the name of this little blog. We moved into this sweetest blue house in September and since then he's built me a craft studio, a dining table and a garden - the ultimate supporter and inspirer of all things craft!

Home again home again jiggity jig! Many, many thanks to the lovely ladies who kept lovelyvélo rolling while I was away - your travel posts were superb!

As always, it's bitter sweet to be home from an amazing holiday. Mallorca was perfect beyond my wildest expectations and I will soon have many photos to share.

Some of the best moments of the trip were the meals we cooked at our villa with delicious ingredients from Pollensa's Sunday market. It made me so excited to come home to the little garden C made for me, now ready for planting! First on my list is zucchini - I hear it grows super quickly and I LOVE goat cheese stuffed zucchini flowers.

When Kristi asked me to contribute to her blog as a guest writer, she thought it might be nice to have a bit of "Canadian Content"... Having lived my whole life in Montreal, I started to think about what truly keeps me here (aside from family and friends and work), and I suppose it is the fact that it does not get any better than this! The quality of life and the culture of the city beats any North American city I know. In fact, perhaps it compares well to many European cities.

Montreal’s proximity to the mountains and lakes takes you out of the city and onto your skis or bike for the weekends. My favorite times are one and one with the outdoors. We have four wonderful distinct seasons and the activities that go with them. In the Fall, our markets explode with color and smell, the apples are ripe for picking, the trees leaves go from green to red to orange to yellow. Our winters start early and end late, but they are picture perfect white landscapes with great blue skies and lots of fresh cold snow; Our spring brings corn snow skiing and maple syrup “tire” on snow, and finally our summer gives us great bike rides through the for farmland crops and long lazy days on the lake!

Hello everyone, I’m Sandy from Cookie Cutter and I’m so honoured to be guest posting here! When Kristi said that the post was to be about my favourite city, I had the answer in my head in a second. There’s no doubt about it that I’m fanatical about the Land of the Rising Sun-- Japan! Having resided in a beautiful Japanese countryside previously, I initially planned to write about my second home. But I thought Tokyo with all its charms and allure will be more interesting for you. So, you ready? Here we go!

Let’s see, a day in Tokyo... I would start my day EARLY. Now I know “early” is very subjective, so I mean even before the sun gets up. Why? This would be the time when the world renowned Tsukiji Fish Market is abuzz with energy and action. Now, few things would get me up from the bed early, Tsukiji would. Trust me, it’ll be worth it. Because right after you’ve caught the action of the auctioning of newly caught fish and seafood, you find yourself a nice little shop (there are countless) and order yourself some sashimi. Freshest of the fresh!

With my stomach now satisfied, I can dwell on other things, namely all things craft related! I love my fabrics so Fabric Town is where I’ll head to next. There are numerous shops (and fabrics) to feast your eyes on but I always make it a point to stop at Tomato. Florals, cartoon prints, kawaii... you name it, they have it, and available not only in bundles but also pre-cut smaller swatches! [image 3] One other crafty place all creative folks have to visit is Tokyu Hands. There are several outlets in Tokyo but in all of them, I always find myself in craft supplies paradise!

I suppose my stomach will be growling by now. A wonderful area to visit and soak in the creative/artsy vibes is Nakameguro. I’ll pick a lovely cafe and be charmed by the decor. Oh, of course stuff my face with bread and pastries too!

If I tear myself away from the charming area in time, I can make a quick visit to Meiji Jingu (shrine). Enjoy the walk and peacefulness that pervades the grounds.

The juxtaposition of this serenity is really just next door. Harajuku! It’s a must go, even if it’s just to people watch. Experience the energy and witness the cutting edge fashion of the young Japanese.

As the sun sets, I’ll make sure I find time to have an enjoyable dinner with my Japanese friends. More oishii food washed down with Kirin beer, punctuated with lots of laughter. Ah, bliss!

The truth is, there’s so much more to Tokyo. Each time I visit, I find it fresh and exciting! Thanks once again to Krisiti for letting me have the chance to share over here. I hope you’ve enjoyed a day in Tokyo with me. I had fun :)

Hi, Monika from Splendid Willow here. The lovely Kristi asked me to jump in and write a post when she is globetrotting the world. She is a creative girl, a good friend, and I was delighted to contribute.

I could take you to so many fun, chic and happening places in my old home town of Stockholm...Instead, hop on my bike! I am going to take you to one - and only one place in that fantastic city.

A marvelous spot smack in the middle of the city. A place that it so unique in the world - Skansen.

Skansen is the world's oldest open air museum, founded in 1891 by Arthur Hazelius. His motto was "Know thyself", for Hazelius that meant, 'we can we only truly know ourselves by knowing our history'

He realized, during his travels around Sweden, that the old agrarian society was about to disappear. Many people moved from rural to urban. Skansen was built with the purpose of showing how people lived and worked in different parts of Sweden before industrialization. Hazelius wanted to show buildings from that time. Plants and animals from all over Sweden - from north to south. And that is what Skansen is today - a living outdoor museum. A historic mini Sweden.

Skansen features amazing views overlooking the capital and antique farmsteads and houses that have been imported from all over the country.

As a child I remember I always enjoyed visiting the old Swedish countryside school. Recess was a little different back then! And the animals are amazing. At Skansen you will get a chance to see animals from the Nordic countries.

There is much to see and do at Skansen. In my opinion, it is one of the best places in the world to learn, explore and just enjoy.You are not allowed to visit Stockholm without a visit to this national treasure!

What I also like about Skansen is the so typically Swedish, peace and quiet.You can walk around here for hours and yet you never leave feeling drained. Just enlightened! There is no plastic anywhere nor loud music, or stressed, screaming people. Instead if feels like you just visited a sanctuary.

Hi, I'm Lana from lanalou style (www.lanaloustyle.blogspot.com) and thanks so much for having me here Kristi! Today I'm going to be giving you a sneak peak into what a day in Marrakesh would be like. It's top on my list of travel destinations at the moment and I imagine a perfect day would be something like this...

Of course we'd be staying in a gorgeous riad, we'd wake up and have a leisurely breakfast on the terrace or roof top to prepare us for the day ahead. Then we'd head off and explore the markets, in search of spices, lanterns and all sorts of Moroccan specialities. We'd take in all the beautiful sights and buildings and stop for mint tea along the way to refresh ourselves. After a day of shopping, sightseeing and colour inspiration, we'd relax and enjoy the sunset and view from above. Ah when can we go, will you join me?

I confess... I went to see Sex and The City 2 this weekend. Not quite as good as the first one, but still some pretty amazing travel fashion to oggle over. Did you know that the Abu Dhabi trip was actually filmed in Morocco and the exquisite hotel is the Mandarin Oriental?

I loved the flash back to all the girls in the 80's. Can you imagine what Carrie must have had in these suitcases?! My favourite ensemble from her Abu Dhabi (ahem, Marrakech) suitcase has got to be the huge purple skirt and Dior t-shirt. Can't say it's a typical style for bargain hunting in the souks - but I adore the Dior!

Remember that dress I was looking for? I tried on several at Holt Renfrew (ranging from $350-$500) and in the end, settled on a short little cutie from Winners for only $25!!! Now, to find the perfect little heels!

It reminded me alot of my favourite book, The Poisonwood Bible, in that they are both told from the perspective of several different women. I've suggested The Help to my bookclub as it's a great conversation piece; and soon coming to the big screen!

Welcome to lovelyvélo's first Suitcase Tuesday! I'm delighted to share with you an interview with Amanda Gary, owner of The Cocker, a four suite home-away-from-home in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As you can see from the photos, the design is exquisite and the house is just full of character. I'd love to hear what you'd pack in your suitcase for a stay at The Cocker... don't forget your Tango shoes!

Tell us about the name!

The name is in honor of Rocco, a bolivian cocker spaniel who was gifted to the previous owners while they were running a local newspaper in La Paz. When they moved to Buenos Aires and decided to open the place, they brought him, and subsequently, it was the only name they could agree upon.

I will say it is a bit difficult at times to say without the occasional sideways glance, especially in the Spanish speaking world which is not so acquainted with the names of dog breeds, but does have a knack for inappropriate vocabulary.

How and when did you stumble upon The Cocker and what inspired you to take it on?

Back when I was a nomadic lassie escaping the rains of the emerald isle, I came down to Buenos Aires in 2006 convinced that I would learn Spanish in six weeks. Failure. I just spoke Italian thinking it was Spanish. And instead of going to the class that I was enrolled in, I started taking tango lessons. Well, that was the big mistake. I decided that I wanted to find a way to stay in Buenos Aires, so the natural next step was to start a business in a country you’ve only been in for forty days, in a language you don’t speak. So, I launched Paragón Tango Departures.

Well, I came back the next year, and the next, and in between guiding bike trips up in the north of Argentina, I was using my time in Buenos Aires to look for small hotels that I could rent out to run my tango trips. So I stayed at the Cocker for a week, and became very good friends with the owner. After my stay, I rented an apartment nearby and would go over there all the time. Come Christmas when I went back to the States, I decided that I wanted to go back to school to get an MFA, and needed a job while I did my applications. The owners of the Cocker wanted to go away for a few months and needed someone to run it for them. So I said, well sure. I went down in January with my bag packed for summer and a plane ticket home in May. But, once there I never left.

The owners wanted to sell it and move on, and I wanted to stay. Plus, I wouldn’t have to rent out any small hotels to run Paragón trips if I had one of my own…So I found some foolish folks that wanted to invest in a bed & breakfast in Buenos aires, and in April of 2008, I took it over.

I love that you refer to the hotel as "the house". What about it makes it most feel like home?

Well, above all, it is in fact a house, because I live there :) And the idea of the place is that people feel at home, literally. In a hotel, I find people often evaluate value by the amenities and “services” provided, whereas the most important thing to me in where someone stays, is that it feels as if they couldn’t have stayed anywhere else. Much of that has to do with atmosphere as opposed to amenities. Also, I think you get so much more sense of a place by interacting with people who live there, and other people who are passing through, so I have tried to foster that in designing the common spaces and the style of the service. The staff I have hired are from all over, and there’s me as well, and everybody’s allowed to say what they think when asked so that you can crawl inside the city more quickly.

Which is your favourite space in the house and why?

There's a little terrace just off the salon with antique floor tiles and columns with inlaid leaf details, that looks out onto the street – it’s no secret, but very few people seem to find their way to it. It feels to me like drinking mint juleps in the South in the summer.

The design of the entire house looks so serene, but I'm especially intrigued by the studio. Tell us a little about the yoga and tango classes.

The studio actually used to be the old owners’ quarters. When I moved in, I built a new room and turned that one into a rentable bedroom. Just after I finished and had it good n’ ready, the Singers Union of Buenos Aires renovated the building next door and put their stage right up against that wall. And away went the bedroom.

Since I am mildly obsessed by the tango, I decided to make the bedroom into a studio and began to offer classes upon request (with other teachers – I’d do no justice trying to teach the dance yet).

Also I think it can be quite intimidating, the first attempts to wrangle the tango, so I wanted to create a comfortable, private space for people to play around.

A few months later, we had to close for the winter to renovate, as it is quite an old building, and the stress of it drove me to look for a good yoga class in the city. After trying out a lot of classes, I found a great pair of American teachers, and decided that when we reopened, I wanted to offer yoga as well. I remember being on the road all the time, and often I looked for yoga classes in various places, but you had to be staying long enough to buy a package deal because they wouldn’t let you just drop in for a single class.

I want people to feel as good as possible while they stay with me, in all aspects of their trip. Some people who come to the class already practice and really like that it offers some consistency in their lives while they’re on vacation. Some people have never done it before, and find it a non-threatening way to start, and then keep going once they return home. And some people come to the class who never seem to have the time at home during their routine, but find that while on vacation, they really can do whatever they want. I’ve included it in the price of the rooms because it’s just as important to me as breakfast -- feeling good while you are on vacation is the point. Especially once you are here for a while and eat your way through the city.

What does a typical day at The Cocker look like?

Breakfast is offered from 9 – 11 am, either around the table in the “nook”, or upstairs on the terrace, as desired. My little minions come early and get everything ready. People check-in throughout the day, but the house is generally quite midday, thus the cleaning and “behind-the-scenes” administration occurs. In the early evening, we often have a "picada,” a sunset glass of wine and some hors d’oeuvres, and people can share their stories and advice, or just hang out. Twice a week in the mornings, there are yoga classes as well, and people can reserve the studio whenever they’d like outside of that for privates or tango classes. Once a month we are also hosting in-house wine tastings, working with a local sommelier who hand-picks wines from small bodegas throughout Argentina to give people a better idea of what’s out there.

It was an exciting night on Friday with C's horse taking its first win, only his 2nd time racing!

You'll get a kick out of the commentary as the horse's name is called nearing the end of the race. C held a contest at work to name the horse and the winner was... Aguyinahorsesuit - love it! You can watch the race here.

I am also loving these 3 beauties, Winston, Molson, and Pilgrim. C and I are going to make a weekend trip to Niagara on the Lake and ride these guys (I'm thinking Winston & Molson make a cute couple ;) through the Niagara Escarpment. Can't wait!

{snails and chicken in barcelona!...}

When C and I went to Barcelona a few years ago, we had an amazing dinner with my cousin at Los Caracoles (translation: snails) after a bike ride around the city.
In the heart of the Bari Gòtic, you're easily lured by the scrumptious smell of roast chicken pouring into the street. When you first step in, you stand with a cerveza in the busy front bar before your name is called and you're led through the open-fire kitchen and into an enormous, rustic underground taverna.
I've saved a post card on my desk in case we ever had the chance to go back, and now we have a reservation for our night in Barcelona after our week in Mallorca!

My grandmother celebrated her 94th birthday yesterday, on Mother's Day. One of her favourite stories to tell is about a train ride she took from Vancouver to the Flying U where she and her best gals would spend the weekends riding. A few hunters "took a shine" to her and told her they would send her something from their hunting trip. She didn't believe them until she opened a huge parcel sent to her office the following week... a grizzly bear skin!

The ranch bug is slowly nibbling at me again as we get closer to Summer. Wouldn't a long weekend at one of these rustic tented ranches be just perfect?!

This one looks similar to the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort that I've shared with you before, but

its actually The Resort at Paws Up in Montana... Stunning!

I'm hoping the skies will clear and settle for my trip next week, my first visit to Chicago! I'm attending an industry event at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and staying at Hotel 71. For weeks I have been working on the final details of a wedding map for the center of a 10 page, hardcover wedding invite that I'm designing for some friends (yes, 10 pages! hard cover!). As my first genuine foray into map design, I can tell you there have been a few tears and many-a-hair pulled. But alas, it is complete and I'm pretty tickled with the final product. They are of course, nothing like these gorgeous creations by Stephanie Barba, but not bad for a first attempt ;)
Once all the invitees have received their copy, I look forward to sharing the full booklet and process with you here!

All I can think about today is mussels! Our cooking class on Saturday started with a course of Mussels Provençal. Such an easy dish to make and delicious to boot!

I took both of these photos on Piha Beach in New Zealand, but the best mussels you can get in Canada come from Prince Edward Island. En Route Magazine voted PEI's Ship to Shore Restaurant & Lounge one of Canada's Top 10 Restaurants of 2009... Worth a trip to the East Coast I think!

I am long overdue to thank the lovely Monika over at Splendid Willow for honouring me with a very sweet blog award. I have been oggling Splendid Willow for months and was delighted to see little lovelyvelo appear on her list.

Now, I am tasked to share 7 things about me that you don't already know, so you won't find anything in this list about pretty hotels, lovely bicycles, paper, or reclaimed wood ;) Hope you enjoy these random little facts.

1. I was born in beautiful British Columbia. Although I love living in Toronto, I am a West Coast girl at heart and miss the ocean, mountains and stunning forests.

2. Maybe because I hail from Vancouver, I feel happiest when it's raining and I have a killer collection of umbrellas!

3. Rain or shine, I love a good game of cards. I grew up playing cribbage with my grandpa and a night with my cousins rarely ends without a game of Traveling Rummy.

4. I speak Chinese. I went to a High School for the arts where most of my classmates were from Hong Kong. They got to take Mandarin, so I decided to join! I lived in Beijing and think China is one of the most fascinating countries in the world. These characters say: Women dou shi yi jia ren... We are family.

5. When I travel to China, I can't come home without pillowcases. I have 2 antiques made by the Naxi women of Lijiang in southern Yunnan province. These pillows with my posing kitty Boomer are from India.

6. I absolutely can not go a day without chocolate. The best chocolate cake I've ever had was in Zhongdian, China on the border of Tibet!

7. I have traveled to 29 countries. I was aiming for 30 before I turned 30, but I'll have to set a new goal. I'm turning 31 next month.

In the past year, I've stumbled upon so many lovely and inspiring blogs. I'd like to pass this lovely award to this list that always make my day a little brighter. Folks below, feel free to share 7 unknowns with your readers and to pass along this beautiful blogger award ;)

{kiwi collection revamped...}

This week, one of my favourite collection of hotels launched its new website. For years, the Kiwi Collection has helped me to plan trips around the world and their photography leaves me breathless and mesmerized on every page.

I have to say, I am a little disappointed in the new site layout. It's a little cluttered and more difficult to navigate. However, the brilliant insight of Mary Gostelow can still be found in their online magazine, Wow Travel, and the photos will still make me weep with desperation to get to each of these hotels!

Last night, I made one of my best meals since C and I moved in together. (When I lived alone, I ate nothing but chicken and sweet potatoes ;)

From this month's cover of Bon Appétit Magazine, I attempted the Fettuccine with Peas, Asparagus, and Pancetta. It was surprisingly light, and very fresh. The lemon juice and peel were really the perfect touch!

Next Saturday, C and I are going to Toronto's Calphalon Culinary Center for a lesson in French Cooking (my Christmas gift from C). On the menu:

Mussels Provençal; Filet au Poivre; Haricot Vert; Apple Tarte Tatin

Mais oui! My mouth is already watering...

I have a lot of reading to do this weekend. I'm only half way through my Tuesday's bookclub read: A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. It's a sad story, but I do love Isherwood's writing style.

What are you reading these days? I'm on the hunt for a more upbeat story... Suggestions please!

Tulips are sprouting in our front garden and I can't wait to find out what colour they'll be. We moved into our little house last August, so this will be our first Spring.

I know many of you have seen this exceptionally sweet painting by Kaili, but I just can't get tired of it. The couple actually looks a little like C and me ;)

Delayed for hours at the Newark airport last week, I found tucked in the Home and Garden section of the New York Times, the wonderfully quirky home of Butch Anthony. So, what does the house of a man who wears exclusively denim coveralls (he has 25 pairs!) look like? Feast your eyes here...

Am I really seeing little snowflakes out my office window? To think just yesterday I was in warm and sunny NYC where Central Park's magnolia trees are in full bloom.

It was a packed 2 days but my event on Wednesday night at the Essex Hotel was a great success... phew!

I can't say that I would ever stay at the Hudson Hotel again. Funky outdoor bar, but the strobe lights in the lobby and the teeny tiny rooms just didn't do it for me.

I did however scout some amazing venues for my next visits, had a lovely dinner on the August patio, and finally got a taste of my first Magnolia Bakery cupcake. The icing was sensational!

I'll be spending the weekend in my wee art space working on wedding invitations for friends. With magnolias on my mind, I think I'll leave Jane's post open on my laptop for inspiration... aren't these photos gorgeous?!

{a weekend pedal in the t.dot...}

Inspired by PUBLIC's contest, I thought I'd guide you - my lovely readers - on a wee pedal through Toronto today. The sun is shining and Olive is happy to be out and about...

Because it's just a leisurely ride, we'll meet at the Harbord Bakery for a little pain au chocolat and maybe throw a baguette in our basket for a nibble later on.

We'll head south to my favourite 'hood, Kensington. Riding the side streets, we'll surely get a glimpse of some other great bikes of all kinds and vintages. You could spend hours skipping in and out of the eclectic shops of Kensington, but sometimes the people watching is better when you just breeze right through. We will, however, make one stop at Global Cheese. After all, we need a little brie to go with our baguette!

We'll take Dundas, a bit chaotic, but just far enough East to catch a glimpse of the oh-so-pretty AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) before scooting up Beverly and crossing my favourite restaurant strip on Baldwin.

As Beverly turns into St. George, we'll pedal through the University of Toronto campus. I love winding through the small paths of the school's beautiful old architecture. We'll hop off here so I can show you my secret little find, hidden in the Knox College building, the most beautiful chapel in the city.

Lucky for us, there's a beautiful courtyard in Knox College where we can enjoy our baguette and brie. A perfect way to end our ride. Hope you enjoyed!

I received a lovely email this morning from the folks at PUBLIC, a soon-to-launch urban bike & gear company based in San Fran. Pretty. Simplistic. Green. Lovely all around. Oh, and they're having a contest.

Love the question: If we came to your hometown for a one-hour bike ride, where would y ou take us and what would we do?

While reading the Globe and Mail yesterday over brunch, I stumbled on London's latest trend, the gastrotel. Hoteliers are re-introducing the traditional experience of renting a room above a local tavern; sprucing up the rooms without losing the authenticity of the pub. I am completely charmed by the 12th Century Old Bell Inn.

As someone who works in travel, I hate to confess that my last trip to London was a complete disaster, roaming the streets upon arrival in the pouring rain in search of our (a-hem prepaid) Craigslist flat that didn't exist. I have a feeling that one of these pub stays would be far more successful!

By the way, our brunch at a new spot in the hood was rather disappointing and confirmed we'll be sticking to our local fave, the always delicious Harbord House.

I've been dying to get to this great little bistro in the West Village - August. I nearly had my next event on the back patio - can't you just see a private little cocktail party with appies made by the wood-fired oven, tea-light candles and hanging twinkly lights?

I'm headed back to NYC early next month and this time will be staying at The Hudson. Their own description of "daredevil design" doesn't completely match some of their seemingly serene outdoor spaces, but rumour has it the bar certainly lives up to the hotel's youthful reputation... Looking forward to it!
